Dear Thorncliffe Families,
We had an absolutely beautiful first week together at Thorncliffe. Highlights include meeting all of the students new to the school, seeing many classes engaged in outdoor learning, and noticing the different ways that teachers are developing their classroom culture. All classrooms feel safe, welcoming, and respectful.
This year we are focusing on Social Emotional Learning in all of our classrooms. Teachers are participating in a book study of “SEL from the Start” by Sara E. Rimm-Kaufman. All classrooms are starting the year by creating collaborative classroom norms. A norm is like a rule, except that it is developed by the whole community based on how teachers and students work together in a classroom. Norms create a shared culture that informs how all community members talk with each other and interact. Classroom norms create an environment with high and positive expectations for everyone that enrich relationships. By the end of September, we hope all Thorncliffe students can speak to the norms in their classroom!
Our Welcome Back Breakfast was a big success! A HUGE thank you to our amazing School Council for their support of the event. All of the food, drinks, plates, and cutlery were provided by our School Council through fund raising efforts throughout the year. We would also like to thank the Calgary Stampede Promotions Committee for Cooking up the delicious pancakes, and to our staff for setting up and taking down the event.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
Nadine and Calleigh
