Dear Thorncliffe Families,
This week we recognize the National Week for Truth and Reconciliation. Monday, September 22nd is a special day for many reasons. It is Fall Equinox, which signifies the change of seasons and the time of harvest in many Indigenous cultures. It marks a period of balance and reflection, as the earth prepares for winter. Additionally, it is Treaty 7 Day which is observed annually to commemorate the signing of Treaty 7 between the Crown and several First Nations in southern Alberta on September 22, 1877. This agreement, established at Blackfoot Crossing on the Siksika Nation, covers the territories of the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, Stoney-Nakoda, and Tsuut'ina First Nations. This week we will also be participating in teaching and learning activities connected to Orange Shirt Day. We will have an assembly for our staff and students on Monday to share reflections and a reconciliACTION for each class. The reconciliACTION is a promise each class is making to ensure that they keep the learning from this week in their actions throughout the year. We encourage all students to wear orange on Monday, or if they do not have an orange shirt, to wear a favourite shirt to honour this important day.
On Thursday, we are thrilled to welcome families into the school for Meet the Teacher evening. A book fair will be set up in the gym for families to shop before or after their Meet the Teacher time slot. There are two times for each classroom available, 5:30-6:00 and 6:15-6:45pm. You are welcome to attend either time. The same presentation will be shared at each time slot.
Warmly,
Nadine and Calleigh
