We have had an amazing first few weeks of learning at Thorncliffe! Our focus as a learning community for the month of September has been to learn about ourselves and our community through the holistic lifelong learning framework. So far, staff and students have reflected and learned together about themselves through the Spirit domain and the Heart domain. Upcoming this month will be the Body and Mind domains. Each classroom has a bulletin board dedicated to displaying the way that they have taken up this work as a learning community that families will be able to see partially completed for Meet the Teacher evening.
At this time, the focus for teachers is getting to know each student both as a person and as a learner. Each grade team has developed a plan for collecting important learning information about their students that will guide them in their work. Assessments include collecting data about student current ability in literacy such as writing and reading assessments, and mathematics assessment. This work is not a test and will not be used for student report cards, rather it is used by teachers to understand what their students already know and what their next steps will be in teaching their class.
Teachers are starting to plan and develop programming for their students with exceptional needs to create Individual Program Plans (IPPs). Over the next few weeks, if your child has a special education code their teacher will be connecting with you to collaborate on a plan for support this year. If your child has an exceptional need and is not identified for an IPP at the school, please reach out to either of us Nadine (nmduque@cbe.ab.ca) or Calleigh (ceharder@cbe.ab.ca) and we can support you with that process as needed.
Thank you all for sending your students to school ready to learn and grow!
Warmly,
Calleigh and Nadine
